A Trip To The Egyptian… A Symphny Of The Cinematic & Musical Senses!
Ok… I get it… So that is a little bit on the more romantic side… But it is true… Recently a friend of mine, ‘Matt Dowling‘ who is the CEO of at AwesomeBMovies.com and cohost of Podcast Zero, went off to an awesome double feature/concert that was being presented by Meltdown Comics, Death Waltz Recording Co. and the Alamo Drafthouse’s Fantastic Fest, as well as being sponsored by Shudder, and much more, for Beyond Fest 2016!
Now before I continue, I should say this… Beyond Fest is an annual film festival that celebrates classic movies, and some contemporary films, but that is done with a little bit of flare! Including guests, and events that will make your movie going experience one that you will never forget!
And now for the event, this past weekend… Ok, so first off, when my buddy and I decided to do this event, we both had thought that it was going to be a lot of fun, what with a couple of classic horror movies that probably haven’t been shown on the big screen to often over the last few decades or so…
Boy were we wrong!
You see, we found out that besides the movies, there was also going to be a preliminary guest appearance by Bruce Campbell (Maniac Cop), and that not only was the composer of the two movies, (The Beyond) & (The Gates Of Hell) Fabio Frizzi was going to be there, but that he was also signing autographs and that he was going to play a short concert for us in between the movies!
Now before I continue, I should say that I met Bruce Campbell a few years ago at a Weekend Of Horror convention, and I have to say that he was and still is literally the coolest dude, and is my favorite actor of all time!
With that said, so when the event first started, of course the awesome people who did this event started talking about Ash Vs. The Evil Dead season 2… And low and behold out comes the man himself Bruce Campell!
Now if you are a horror fan, then you are going to know that this guy truly is a headliner… I mean this guy can really pack a house! And so, it was no surprise when he came out, everybody erupted in to one of applause and joy as one of the greats in the horror world came out to talk!
Well he talked for a few minutes about his show, ‘Ash Vs. The Evild Dead’ and what not, and then gave us a sneak peak at season 2!
Now for me, I haven’t had the chance to see the series yet… Unfortunately it is not on any channel I am subscribed to, nor is it streaming on anything I am signed up with… But when I discovered just how amazing that season 2 was going to be… Of course I had to find out where I could get season 1 so I could start in on that series… (Don’t worry folks… Those reviews are on their way!)
Next we dove in to the first movie, The Beyond (1981), directed by: Lucio Fulci (Massacre Time) & Starring: Catriona MacColl (House By The Cemetery) & David Warbeck (Razor Blade Smile).
Now I had never seen this movie before, and it is an interesting story about the gates to hell and Zmbies (I will be going in to a recommendation on this over at AwesomeBMovies.com soon,) but the thing about this that made it in some ways even cooler, in other ways a little bit hard for me to take was that it was a composers cut of the film!
Now the music did not come from the movie, but had actually been played separately… And for the most part I have to say that it was pretty cool… There was just a few areas where I would have rather heard what the people in the movie had to say, as opposed to the musical accompaniment…
But beyond those few small times (and it was only like 2 or 3 times,) I thought the music was brilliant for the film, and being a fan of that type of music, it really just enhanced the whole experience!
After the first movie was done, there was an amazing 30 min or so, where Mr. Frizzi and his band played some music that was just awesome!
After that there was the a brief intermission, and then they played another Fulci classic on the big screen, The Gates Of Hell (1980)!
To wrap it up, I have to give props to Beyond Fest for putting on an awesome event, with some amazing guests, and Fabio Frizzi for the amazing music! All of this made for a great event, one that as a horror fan, I highly recommend you check out next time!
