Candyman (1992) – Movie Review

Ok, so I was recently reading about a rundown Chicago area tenement that was being torn down… The way it was phrased was, ‘The last hope for housing for the homeless…” Ok I hope that is not true… The homeless may seem like an irritation to some of us… But the truth is, is they deserve human kindness and decency and the belief that some day they can start to get back on their feet and succeed and thrive again!

Sorry for making this article a little bit about the homeless epidemic in this country… There is a reason for why I mention this, and that is because the rundown apartment building that was being closed down is, ‘Cabrini Green’… Now for those who don’t recognize the name of the building, it is the name of the building where a large portion of the first Candyman movie takes place… And the building itself, that is being torn down… Actually was the location for filming the movie!

Written by:  Clive Barker (Hellraiser), Bernard Rose (Paperhouse) & Directed by: Bernard Rose. Starring: Tony Todd (Final Destination), Virginia Madsen (Highlander II: The Quickening), Xander Berkley (The Walking Dead) & Kasi Lemmons (Silence Of The Lambs).

”They will say that I have shed innocent blood. What’s blood for if not for shedding? With my hook for a hand, I’ll split you from your groin to your gullet. I came for you.“ – Candyman, A quote from the movie Candyman (1992).

This is the great tale of the legend of the, ‘Candyman’ a murdered former slave who comes back to kill you when you say his name 5 times… But in the modern day, more so than anything the Candyman has gone from being a real threat, to becoming a myth, and a way to scare the hell out of kids during sleep overs!

But when Helen Lyle (Played by: Virginia Madsen) and Bernadette Walsh (Played by: Kasi Lemmons) decide to do a legitimate study of where the legend comes from and the tragedy behind the legend…  They will end up opening up a pandora’s box that they will not only not be able to close… But will change their lives and the lives of everyone they know and love, forever!

Now I have to admit, I am a huge fan of Clive Barker’s work… Whether it be written or in films… The imagery that he puts in to his stories are so real, and so visceral, that honestly can scare some of the most diehard horror fans! (It took me a few years of watching the Hellraiser franchise, before I finally got comfortable with it enough that I rather got to enjoy it!)

The only problem that I have with this movie… Actually it is more with the franchise… This movie is amazing… I mean if you get a chance to watch it, but haven’t yet… Please do so… You are going to love it! But with the franchise… I know there has been some stupid legal issues that basically ended the franchise… But every movie in goes from fair to great, (not in that order), but never branched in to the overly cheeseball, and had some more energy before the studios ended up killing it!

All I am gonna say is this, if you haven’t seen it… See it, you will be glad you did!
