Classic Video Games No Longer In Circulation: The Original Phantasy Star Series
So I thought that I would start a new series on video games that I thought you guys might be interested in called, ‘Classic Video Games No Longer In Circulation’…. Now what I want to do with this series is to bring back to the front, a video game series that has either disappeared entirely… Or which has mostly disappeared… Or the video games that have been dropped in to the remake/reboot bin… And thus reminding people of where these reboot/remakes come from.
With that said though I wanted to do a video game series that I personally really liked as a kid and I think could be pretty awesome if they had brought back… That is the original story line for the, ‘Phantasy Star’ series!
Now it is true that there are various indepent Phantasy Star story lines at this point as well as reboots of the original video game series… But if you want to know the truth… There is nothing like the original series!
You see, this video game series, which started off on the Sega Master System in 1987 had several amazing indepent story lines, that all sort of were connected to the entirety of a story line, (this I have never seen done so well before in any video game I have ever played…) The original series takes place in the Algol Solar System, which consists of four planets: Palma, a fertile agricultural world; Motavia, a desert planet; Dezoris, an ice planet; and the mysterious Rykros, whose elongated orbit brings it within visible range only once every thousand years. Players travel to all four planets throughout the series, interacting with each unique set of inhabitants and discovering the secrets to the solar system’s genesis, which is irrevocably tied to an ancient conflict.
Amazing right? Well I will be honest and say that Phantasy Star 1 and 2 are the only 2 video games from the original series that I have played, and I have to say that they are both amazing games that have really diffcult but extremely addictive game narratives (i,e… challenging storylines that you have to get through,) but they are insanely addictive… The controls are pretty easy to figure out, and honestly the best thing about all of this really is the addictive narrative of these games… They combine the classic fantasy aspects that marked alot of those RPGs from way back when… With a strong science fiction angle!
Ultimately this series maybe surviving mostly in name only… But this is one, that if Sega was smart, they would bring back the classic original video stories on a new console… And continue with the original story line, and make some new games with the original story line… It would be fine to keep the remakes and all that other stuff… But never forget these classics! They could bring old classics to a next generation… And finally give the fans the new console they have always wanted!
