So there has been some great decades for horror over the years… The 70s and 80s were a great set of decades for horror (As a matter of fact, some would go so far as to say that the 1980s was the last great decade for horror!)
For my money though I am gonna have to say the 1990s was truly the last great decade for horror… Well at least for slasher films… I mean there has been a ton of great campy Slasher films to come out in the 90s! Including: the, ’Scream’ franchise and the, ‘I Know What You Did last Summer’ franchise!
And speaking of I Know What You Did Last Summer… The first one that came out in 1997 truly defined 90s horror!
Written by: Kevin Williamson (Scream) & Directed by Jim Gillespie (Billionaire’s Ransom). Starring: Jennifer Love-Hewitt (Can’t Hardly Wait), Sarah Michelle Gellar (Scream 2), Freddie Prinze Jr. (She’s All That), Ryan Phillippe (Way Of The Gun) & Muse Watson (Something To Talk About).
”Oh, you got a letter? I got run over! Helen gets her hair chopped off, Julie gets a body in her trunk, and you get a letter? That’s balanced!” – Barry (Played by: Ryan Phillippe in the movie, I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997).)
After Helen Shivers (Played by: Sarah Michelle Gellar) wins a beauty pageaent, Julie James (Played by: Jennifer Love Hewitt), Barry William Cox (Played by: Ryan Phillippe), and Ray Bronson (Played by: Freddie Prinze Jr.) are celebrating along with graduation on the 4th of July.
The four friends go to a party and decide to head out to the beach in the middle of the night. Barry, who is intoxicated, decides to let Ray drive his car back home from the beach.
On their way home, they hit and apparently kill a man who is walking in the road. While thinking what to do with the corpse, Julie’s friend Max Neurick (Played: Johnny Galecki) arrives. Julie tells him that everything is fine so he leaves.
While dumping the body in a nearby sea, the body becomes alive and tries to attack Helen. They dump the corpse in the ocean and agree to never discuss again what had happened.
But some times ghost don’t die… And some one has come to let these four friends know that some one knows what they did last summer!
Now the movie’s stars in this movie in my opinion really truly make this movie iconic… Each and everyone was at the top of their careers as young attractive celebrities in the 90s… And where as they are still great actors and actresses, they have never been the same since.
And this movie was sort of the last run of truly great slasher franchises… I mean, ‘Hatchet’ was a good franchise I guess… But nothing like anything the preceeded it!
If you haven’t seen this movie… Watch it, it will give you the level of thrills and chills that make these types of movies a ton of fun!
