Phantasy Star 2: A Great Video Game And Game Changer!
That’s right folks… For those of you who don’t know what Phantasy Star 2 is, it is the sequel in the classic Sega series, which started out on the master system, and whose future sequels would go on to see some sucess in future video game consoles!
Now I can’t attest to all of the video games in this franchise, because in all honesty, I have not actually played the other games in this series… But Phantasy Star 2… That one was something!
Ok, it was great for me personally because I love Sci-fi… The whole genre, I do, I think the genre is great no matter what medium it is in… Hell I am even a bit of a trek nerd! And so when I found out when I was about 9 or 10 that there was a sci-fi RPG… (For me, that truly is the best of both worlds,) I just about literally freaked out I was so happy, (and honesttly, I have stayed that way ever since!)
You see, before that point most, (if not all,) of the RPGs at that point were all Fantasy based, (like the, ‘Final Fantasy’ series, and the, ‘Legend Of Zelda’ series…)
The series’ primary antagonist, Dark Force (known as “Dark Falz” in the first game), the embodiment of evil, returns as one of the main enemies the player must defeat. Mother Brain, a computer system built to control and maintain the Algo Star System, has begun to malfunction, and the main character, Rolf, must determine why. Another character, Lutz, also makes an appearance in the middle of the game.
Anyway, besides the fact that this was the first video game to use the 6 Mega-Bit cartridge (thus making it the biggest game of it’s time,) but it also helped to pave the way for other such classics to begin to be developed in both the Science Fiction and Horror genre’s for not only RPGs but also for first person shooter games such as: The Chrono Trigger/Cross series, Parasite Eve as well as Bio Shock and so much more!
Now I know this game has become a bit hard to find… But it is out there… Sega put it in their Genesis collection that they made for the XBox 360, there is also, apparently a, ‘next generation version of the game’ that sounds like it is updated… But it is a fun one, and if you do like the game, then I highly recommend checking it out, it is certainly well worth it!
