Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Season 1 – Episode 1 ‘Part 1 & 2’ (1993) – TV Episode Review

So for you Trekkies out there, I am sure you can understand the insane awesomeness that comes with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, this show was an amazing show that could almost, say, combine the action that made the original Star Trek series so awesome, and the style and poshness that made Star Trek: The Next Generation so interesting, and brought them in to a wonderful melding.

What I mean by this, is they took all of the elements that have always made all of the Star Trek shows great, including: A wonderfully different set of leaders (Like: Kirk (TOS), Picard (TNG), Sisko (DS9), Janeway (VOY), Archer (ENT), and I suspect whoever is the Captain in the new series!) And a diverse crew of Aliens as well as humans… Then you put them in an element that is both exciting, while also being some what educational!

For me, that is how growing up a Trekkie was like for me!

And so I am glad to be doing this review for Part 1 & 2 of the pilot episode, ‘Emissary’ for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine!

Written by: Rick Berman (Star Trek: Nemesis), Michael Piller (Star Trek: Insurrection) & Directed by: David Carson (Star Trek: Generations). Starring: Avery Brooks (The Big Hit), Rene Auberjonois (MASH), Alexander Siddig (Vertical Limit), Cirroc Lofton (Ball Don’t Lie), Colm Meaney (Con Air), Nana Visitor (Friday The 13th), Terry Farrell (Hellraiser 3: Hell On Earth), Armin Shimerman (Porthole) & Patrick Stewart (X-Men: Fight The Future).

“That may be the most important thing to understand about humans. It is the unknown that defines our existence. We are constantly searching, not just for answers to our questions, but for new questions. We are explorers. We explore our lives day by day, and we explore the galaxy, trying to expand the boundaries of our knowledge. And that is why I am here. Not to conquer you with weapons, or with ideas. But to coexist… and learn.” – Commander Benjamin Sisko (A quote from Avery Brooks from part 1 of the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode: Emissary.)

Now this being the pilot epsiodes tells an interesting tale of how after a decades long occupation of an Alien world, ‘Bajor’ by the, ‘Cardassians’, the Cardassians have finally decided to leave what is left of the Bajorans alone… Now Bajor is wrecked, due to basically the Cardassians leaving after plundering the Bajoran sector and it’s people of almost everything!

And so after the Cardassians leave, the Bajorans decide to call the Federation for assistance, and to setup a command post on an old Ore processing base that hovers over the planet by the name of, ‘Terok Nor’.

In comes Commander Bejanmin Sisko (Played by: Avery Brooks) and his team to come in and help the Bajorans not only recover from the damage that the Cardassians wrought on them. But also to help usher the Bajorans in to the Federation!

The problem is, is that Commander Sisko is one of the many victims of a previous enemy attack on the Federation, when he lost his wife in battle with the, ‘Borg’ and he doesn’t really want to put himself and his son, ‘Jake’ (Played by: Cirroc Lofton) in any harm… And doesn’t really want the assignment!

But when he and his science officer, ‘Lieutenant Jadzia Dax’ (Played by: Terry Farrell) discover a stable wormhole that goes to another part of the Galaxy, Commander Sisko, his team, the Bajorans, the Federation and the rest of the galaxy will be fundamentally changed forever!

In the end if you are a Trekkie you are going to love this episode because it is the first episode of what will later prove to be a tremendously fantastic series! But if you are just looking for a fun scifi series, Emmisary is kind of a dull episode in what will later prove to be a rather fun series!

So check it out, and keep up with future epsidoes, I think you might find that you enjoy it no matter if you are a Trekkie or just looking for something fun and exciting to watch!
