The Aging Metal Super Stars… And The Direction Heavy Metal Music Is Going.
Ok, so when I was younger I grew up listening to the likes of, ‘Metallica’, ‘Pantera’, ‘Nine Inch Nails’, ‘Marilyn Manson’ and a ton of the other great heavy metal legends as my inspiration for heavy metal becoming some of my favorite music of all times…
I hate to say it though, as time has gone on I have fallen a little out of touch with heavy metal and the direction that it has taken… (It may seem odd that I am writing about this genre of music because of this…) That was until my wife about 3 years ago had told me that I was getting to be one of those crochety old men that was stuck in there own generations music (And at the time I was barely 30!)
Now for me, growing up with the likes of, ‘Metallica’, ‘Nirvana’ & ‘Nine Inch Nails’, as well as many others, and there differing but still basic style of metal, that helped define an entire decade of heavy headbanging metal genius… getting in to other types of music was really hard… And my wife was right! I was becoming to inflexible when it came to the type of music that I was listening to!
So one night I happen to be in the office when I heard some music that I had never heard before… It was headbanging and it was awesome! But it was new (the album that this song had come from hadn’t been out for very long,) and so it fascinated me! It fascinated me for the similarities that had to classic Metallica, and it fascinated me for it’s obvious differences as well… It was the song, ‘Warrior’ from Disturbed!
Now Disturbed itself is not actually a particularly new band… But it was new to me, and it was new to me in a time when Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails had split, Metallica was on the verge of breaking up… And Marilyn Manson hadn’t really done anything for quite a few years… Nor had most of the rest of the classics…
Well this song gave me hope… I mean this song had a brilliant hard core style that I love, that is surrealistic, but not just people shouting a lot… And that is awesome… And this song gave me hope that there was more out there then just the narrow minded ideas I had about a music style that although may have been given prominence by some of the biggest heavy metal bands of the 80s and 90s… But with those bands not really doing much… I found my hope in new bands… And you know what? There actually is some cool stuff out there that is still really popular right now!
It is so true… I haven’t gotten down to everything… I mean I haven’t actually had the chance to completely dive in to everything, but what I have been able to dive in to, I have to say that I really like!
So this next example was not only a great example of some awesome head banging music, but is the first time in a long time that I have found a death metal band that I really like… That band being: Children Of Bodom and their first song that I got to hear from them being, ‘I Hurt’ from their 2015 album, ‘I Worship Chaos’!
Now why did this band, this song appeal to me… Because like a lot of ultra metal heads, I am also a huge fan of the darker themed music… It really appeals to me! Another thing that I really like about this band is it is a death metal band!
That may seem like no big deal to you, but it is for me… I haven’t heard a lot of death metal that I have found to be particularly appealing… A lot of time I hate to say it, but I have found that a lot of death metal and speed metal bands to play really quickly, instrumentals that would be better played as regular heavy metal… And there has been more then one death metal band that I have heard over the years that did sound like the lead singer was just yelling in to the microphone and not really making music!
Children Of Bodom sort of embodies the better aspects of this type of music… I mean their instrumentals are hardcore and played at a speed that is quick enough to keep you on the edge of your seat for an adrenaline pumping good time… But the lyrics don’t sound like some one is basically yelling in to the microphone for about 5 minutes!
Another modern day gem is, ‘Seasons After’!
Ok I have to admit that I don’t know much of this band, as a matter of fact, there is only one song of theirs that I have heard, and it is not even theirs! And if they can turn this classic 80s song in to a modern hardcore heavy metal masterpiece, then the potential for the genius of their music is amazing!
This song being a cover of the classic G Tom Mac song, ‘Cry Little Sister’ that was done for, The Lost Boys (1987)!
Now the G Tom Mac song is pretty hard core, and is awesome… And with it’s some what darkly religious overtones… It is kind of like listening to a really awesome horror movie! Seasons After took all of that… Kept a lot of those aspects in there, but gave it that harsh surrealistic heavy metal overtone that made a lot of Nine Inch Nails classics of the 1990s so awesome!
Anyway, these are just a few examples of some of the great heavy metal music that has come out in the last decade fresh… From relatively fresh faced bands… And between that and the fact that the legends that really did legitimize this type of music making a come back, what with Metallica having recently released their newest studio album recently and Nine Inch Nails having released a new album… Well in an industry that is constantly changing… Who knows where this is all going… But with the fresh faced newbies to the world of heavy metal, and the aging heavy metal geniuses still around… Right now I do have to say that I like the direction that this is going!
