The Ring (2002) – Movie Review

One of the things that I find really interesting, and I am hoping to do a blog about it in the very near future is the fact that alot of horror movies directly or indirectly take place out in the middle of nowhere, some place secluded… Like a summer camp! (Ala Friday The 13th), or a house out in the middle of nowhere, (Ala When A Stranger Calls)!

And these movies are some of the kind of really freaking awesome, scary, and alot of them help really get the blood pumping!

Well The Ring (2002) is one of those movies that is both in the big city and out in the boondocks, but is still awesome!

Written by: Ehren Kruger (Arlington Road), based on the novel by: Koji Suzuki (Dark Water) & Directed by: Gore Verbinski (A Cure For Wellness). Starring: Naomi Watts (The Wolf Hour), Martin Henderson (Everest), David Dorfman (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Daveigh Chase (Donnie Darko) & Brian Cox (Manhunter).

“You start to play it… and it’s like somebody’s nightmare. Then suddenly, this woman comes on. Smiling at you, right? Seeing you… through the screen. Then when it’s over, your phone rings. Someone knows you watched it. And what they say is, “You will die in seven days”. And exactly seven days later…” – Becca (A quote by: Rachel Bella from the movie, The Ring (2002).)

This is the chilling tale of a fantasy tape that pops up every so often…  It is a VHS tape (This movie came out around the end of the VHS era.) Now, if you find it, don’t watch it! You see this video is cursed! If you watch it… Within seven days you are slated to die!

And so when the teenage niece of Rachel Keller (Played by: Naomi Watts) decides to watch it, and she ends up dying because of it, Rachel makes the fatal mistake of watching it, while investigating her niece’s death… And if the legend is to be believed, she and her family are going to have to race against the clock to find the origin of this tape and stop it before she dies!

Now this movie is great, it has a great cast, and a fun, fairly inventive story line, and since the movie was released in 2002, it has some really solid special effects… But when this movie was released, it was touted as basically being the next great horror movie to be released!

Now this movie came out during the same time that the United States was remaking Japanese horror films, and so this one is based on the movie, ‘Ringu’… And where as I think this movie is good, I think the original is likely to be truly freaking amazing!

Either way, this movie is a total blast… Well worth it! If you get a chance, I highly recommend checking it out, it is pretty awesome!
