American Psycho (2000) – Horror Movie Review

Patrick Bateman maybe rich… But this rich boy from the 80s want to spend a little quality time with his friends and help them to become real cut ups!

So I think it is pretty safe to say that most people in this world at this point acknowledge the fact that they first recognized Christian Bale (Batman) for the work that he did in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy…

Well I am the first one to acknowledge that, that franchise is great, and that Christian Bale is one of the better Bruce Wayne’s ever! But I found him before he played, ‘Batman/Bruce Wayne’ or even, ‘John Connor’ in Terminator: Salvation (2009)!

I discovered him when he gave us a chilling performance in the classic 2000’s horror/thriller movie, American Psycho (2000)!

Written by: Mary Harron (I Shot Andy Warhol), Guinevere Turner (The Notorious Bettie Page) & Directed by: Mary Harron. Starring Christian Bale, Justin Theroux (Mulholland Drive), Josh Lucas (Poseidon), Bill Sage (Hape & Leonard), Chloe Sevigny (Lizzy), Reese Witherspoon (Election), Samantha Mathis (The Clovehitch Killer), Jared Leto (The Suicide Squad) & Willem Dafoe (The Boondock Saints).

“There are no more barriers to cross. All I have in common with the uncontrollable and the insane, the vicious and the evil, all the mayhem I have caused and my utter indifference toward it I have now surpassed. My pain is constant and sharp, and I do not hope for a better world for anyone. In fact, I want my pain to be inflicted on others. I want no one to escape. But even after admitting this, there is no catharsis; my punishment continues to elude me, and I gain no deeper knowledge of myself. No new knowledge can be extracted from my telling. This confession has meant nothing.” – Patrick Bateman (A quote by Christian Bale from the movie: American Psycho (2000).)

In the 1980s, when greed is at it’s extreme… Patrick Bateman (Played by: Christian Bale) is handsome, well educated and intelligent. He is twenty-seven and living his own American dream. He works by day on Wall Street, earning a fortune to complement the one he was born with. At night he descends into madness, as he experiments with fear and violence.

One of Patrick Bateman’s many nightly activities!

His friends, his co-workers and the women who love him don’t know the real Patrick Bateman… Maybe Patrick Bateman doesn’t know who Patrick Bateman is… But when his inner circle begins to find out who the real Patrick Bateman really is… They will all descend in to the madness of a wall street banker who has to much time and to much blood on his hands… And so starts killing those that love him the most!

Now here is what I love about this movie…

A: This movie helped really drive to A list status a ton of truly fantastic actors and actresses… Including: Christian Bale, Jared Leto… It helped keep Reese Witherspoon’s career going really nicely, and in my opinion it brought back Chloe Sevigny from mostly obscurity!

Future A-Listers and continuing super stars!

A1: I mean Christian Bale went on to play, ‘Batman/Bruce Wayne’ in the Christopher Nolan, ‘Batman’ movies and had a starring role in the first post-Schwarzenegger terminator outing… But his career has continued on doing a ton of great films!

A2: Jared Leto would go on to become the most recent joker… (Well until the Joaquin Phoenix movie comes out.)

A3: Reese Witherspoon… I haven’t followed her recently… But she would also star with Joaquin Phoenix in, Walk The Line (2005).

A4: Chloe Sevigny would go on to star in one of HBO’s biggest series with the late great Bill Paxton (Aliens)… That TV series being: Big Love.

B: I have gotten the opportunity to see this movie quite a few times over the years, and with American Psycho being based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis (The Rules Of Attraction)… I now really want to read the book!

Turns out the movie is based on the popular novel by Bret Easton Ellis!

C: Finally I have to say that one of the other things that I really liked is the Soundtrack from the movie! If you like 80s music, you are sure to love this movie!

In the end, the only thing I never fully understood about this movie is why they could not get Christian Bale back for this movie as a series! I mean it really could have made for a fantastic franchise!

Check this one out! It is more than well worth it!
