Annihilation (2018) – Sci-Fi Movie Review

Natalie Portman is a great actress… But this just is not a great movie!

So Natalie Portman (Black Swan)… This woman is pretty awesome! With all of the work that she has done in the world of Hollywood as an actress since she did, Leon: The Professional (1994).

Now I personally have beein following her awesome career for many years… And you know what? Don’t hate me for saying this… She definitely sold me on her being a legit actress… but what got me following her career regularly was the Star Wars prequels (I know… I may be like literally one of the small handful who have liked those movies, but I do like them!)

Unfortunately… Where as I have rather enjoyed just about everything that she has done… Annihilation (2018)… Sadly, that is not one of them…

Written & Directed by: Alex Garland (28 Days Later). Starring: Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson (Men In Black: International), Tuva Novotny (DAG4), Gina Rodriguez (Deepwater Horizon), Jennifer Jason Lee (Dolores Claibourne), Oscar Isaac (X-Men: Apocalypse) & Sonoya Mizuno (Maniac).

“The mutations were subtle at 1st; more extreme as we got closer to the lighthouse. Corruptions of form. Duplicates of form.” – Lena (A quote by: Natalie Portman from the movie Annihilation (2018).)

Ok, so before I go in to the movie itself, I am going to say this… The biggest flaw in this movie is basically the story… The cast is actually kind of surprisingly great… The director is amazing… But the story is shocking garbage… But didn’t have to be!

A great example of a movie that just did not have the story to fit everything!

You see this movie tells the story of how some sort of, ‘shimmer’ thing is slowly enveloping the world (Kind of shockingly slow… And the United States Government has sent in the military and scientists for years!

Now a new group of scientists are about to go in… These scientists at are from various fields… Including Lena (Played by: Natalie Portman) a scientist and former soldier who is looking for her husband, who went in to the shimmer thing!

The main problem with the story is that there is no point to it! Most Alien invasion movies have the aliens coming to Earth to take it over with a point to it… This just did not have it!

War Of The Worlds (1953)… A movie about aliens invading with a point and a purpose… Not an Alien that will take over the world in a few decades!

The only alien (That looks like some sort of S&M bondage performance art mistake,) has decided to take as long as humanly possible to change the Earth for no reason whatsoever… except that he or she or it… Has to be a senior citizen… Because the speed this alien is changing the planet is about the same speed that TV and movies some times stereotype old people driving!

Anyway, I maybe wrong… Check it out if you like.
