Iron Man 2 (2010) – Sci-fi Movie Review

Iron Man and War Machine suit up!

Ok, so at this point I think just about everything that can be said about the, ‘Iron Man’ franchise has been said… And probably the same with the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) as well… But for an old comic book fan like myself… I will say this, there is something that really impresses me about what the people at Disney have done to re-create the Marvel comic universe for the big screen!

I mean it is not perfect… Not by any means… But I will be honest… It is pretty freaking amazing! I mean I have been impressed with the work that has been done with this for quite some time! Here is an example of what I am talking about!

And now I will say this… Where as it is pretty awesome, and RDJ (Robert Downey Jr.) Continues to impress as Iron Man, and where as Disney continues to do a pretty amazeballs job at the cinematic universe… There is something about Iron Man 2 (2010)… That really just does not seem to hit the mark!

Written by: Justin Theroux (Cape Fear) & Director by: Jon Favreau (Dardevil). StarringL Robert Downey Jr. (Avengers), Gwyneth Paltrow (Se7en), Don Cheadle (Crash), Scarlett Johansson (Her), Sam Rockwell (Moon), Mickey Rourke (Sin City), Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction) & Clark Gregg (Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.).

“Well, you can forget it. I am Iron Man. The suit and I are one. To turn over the Iron Man suit would be to turn over myself, which is tantamount to indentured servitude or prostitution, depending on what state you’re in. You can’t have it.” – Tony Stark/Iron Man (A quote by: Robert Downey Jr. from the movie, Iron Man 2 (2010).)

This movie tells the story of Ivan Vanko (Played by: Mickey Rourke) and his insane level of hatred for Tony Stark (Played by: Robert Downey Jr.) And Ivan’s amazing hatred for the entire Stark family…

Tony Stark (Played by: Robert Downey Jr. & Ivan Vanko (Played by: Mickey Rourke) have a heart to hear!

Now this is due to what happened between Ivan’s father way back in the day when Howard Stark (Played by: John Slattery) and he were working on the blue prints for the potential ark reactor.

You see, due to Dr. Vanko, while working with Howard Stark as an inventor… Was also selling stuff to America’s enemies, and so ended up being deported back to Russia, where he and the Vanko line spent time in one of Soviet Russia’s dreaded, ‘gulag’ prisons!

With that said, when Ivan’s father passes away, Ivan decides to finally get the revenge he is so desperately craving! And decides to use his father’s work, and the help of Justin Hammer (Played by: Sam Rockwell) to do everything he can to destroy Iron Man and Tony Stark and finally get revenge for what he thinks Howard did to his father!

Ivan really wants Tony to come out and play!

Now for the plus points:

1: Disney’s casting for this movie is pretty awesome, and helped developed more of the characters that would end up becoming so pivitol in the future MCU… including; Pepper Potts (Played by: Gwynth Paltrow), Rhodey (Played by: Don Cheadle) as well as Nick Fury (Played by: Samuel L. Jackson)!

2: You know I will say this, I really do enjoy the newer MCU, but there was something truly unique and awesome about some of the older Marvel movies that were really quite fun… They were smaller in cast… And more focused on Character development… Etc… They brought this model back for Ant-Man (2015)… And it really worked well! But they perfected it with the, ‘Iron Man’ series!

The Iron Man series perfected a formula that in my opinion really worked, and the Ant-Man series brought it back to life in a spectcaular way!

Now for the minus part:

So, even the best of creators generally tend not to hit the mark every time… And honestly… I never was a huge fan of, ‘Justin Hammer’… And where as I thought that Sam Rockwell did a fine job portraying him… I still thought Justin Hammer was the, ‘Jar Jar Binks’ of that movie. Also… I still think the scenes where RDJ is partying in the suite… Or doing that stupid Stark Expo as Iron Man, was still pretty bad!

In the end, there is a ton of other better Marvel movies out there… But it is assuredly a must for fans of the franchise as well as the MCU, as it does connect in the time line for both… So if you have a chance to see it, I highly recommend doing so!
