Ok, so Phillip K. Dick (Blade Runner)… There is something about him that is truly bizarre… Just about all the movies that are based on his work are truly freaking amazing… From his more memorable works, (Total Recall) to his less memorable works, such as, (The Man In The High Castle).
Before I continue, let me explain that what I mean is not rather or not, they are memorable or not as shows or movies… But that if you asked people… My guess is 90% of the people you ask probably would not recognize these great shows and movies connected with his work!
It is a shame! Never the less, he spent his life writing some great stuff… And you know what? Minority Report (2002) is definitely one of them!
Written by: Scott Frank (Logan), Jon Cohen (Minority Report: The Story, The Debate) & Directed by: Steven Spielberg (Jaws). Starring: Tom Cruise (Mission Impossible), Max Von Sydow (The Seventh Seal), Steve Harris (The Rock), Neal McDonough (Legends Of Tomorrow), Patrick Kilpatrick (Eraser), Jessica Capshaw (Valentine) & Colin Farrell (In Bruges).
“You see the dilemma don’t you. If you don’t kill me, precogs were wrong and precrime is over. If you do kill me, you go away, but it proves the system works. The precogs were right. So, what are you going to do now? What’s it worth? Just one more murder? You’ll rot in hell with a halo, but people will still believe in precrime. All you have to do is kill me like they said you would. Except you know your own future, which means you can change it if you want to. You still have a choice Lamar. Like I did.” – John Anderton (A quote by Tom Cruise from the movie, Minority Report (2002).)
This movie tells the story of a sort of technologically advanced… But still quite dystopian future. Now unlike most dystopian futures… America is still completely there… But everyone is held down by the Pre-Crime Unit!
You see, there is an entire police force that is created around 3 people (2 brothers and a sister,) who can see crimes before they happen…
The unit is called, ‘Pre-Crime’ their effort is to stop all crime before it really begins everywhere in the country… And you know what? It worked out so well, that no one questioned the validitiy of it and followed the pre-cogs (the telepaths mentioned above.)
But when one of Pre-Crimes most dedicated officers is accused of commiting a murder in the very near future of some one that he has never actually heard of or seen before… He will begin to dissect everything about the organization…
And in so doing, will end up, uprooting a system that has potentially thousands upon thousands of people quite innocent!
Now I really want to read the Phillip K. Dick short story… I have a feeling that, (well like most movies versus most stories,) that the short story is going to be absolutely awesome!
As for the movie itself… It is a fun film… Really my only real problem with it is this… The movie itself is great… But Tom Cruise when it comes to his action movies, have very similar type of method upon which they operate… Which is still a ton of fun… But it rarely deviates to far… And it would be fun to see a little bit of deviation in this film!
Either way, it is fun. If you get a chance, you should consider checking it out! It is a fun film!
