Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) – Sci-Fi Movie Review

Star Trek: The Motion Picture… I liked it!

So Star Trek is one of those shows that really does seem to have done it right! What I mean by this is the fact that over the last over 50 years that Star Trek has been around… This series went from being a popular ratings bomb to one of the most prolific movie series of all time!

Now when this series was still in it’s original tv series run, apparently this show was incredibly popular with the audiences, but not really with the critics… And so it only lasted a few seasons, but that is when the series went and skyrocketed!

You see after that the crowd grew that loved the original series… And then in the last 1970s, the creators of Star Trek were going to bring back the series to TV in a spinoff series… But due to the old sets from the show from the 60s show being basically wrecked, they decided to turn the new TV series, in to a new movie! And thus we have: Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979).

Written by: Harold Livingston (Mannix) & Directed by: Robert Wise (The Andromeda Strain). Starring: William Shatner (Baby Baby Baby), Leonard Nimoy (The Invasion Of The Body Snatchers), Deforest Kelly (Night Of The Lepus), James Doohan (New York Skyride), George Takei (A Time To Heal), Majel Barrett (West World), Walter Koenig (Babylon 5), Nichelle Nichols (Sharknado 5: Global Warming), Persis Khambatta (Warrior Of The Lost World) & Stephen Collins (Revolution).

“Just a moment, Captain, sir. I’ll explain what happened. Your revered Admiral Nogura invoked a little-known, seldom-used “reserve activation clause.” In simpler language, Captain, they DRAFTED me!” – Doctor McCoy (A quote by: Deforest Kelly from the movie: Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979).)

A few centuries ago NASA sent out a probe to seek out and contact new life… And you know what? It found that new life!

The prob in it’s new environment.

You see, the probe has found that new life and has gotten massively upgraded, and is now headed back through space to it’s creator on Earth! It has invaded territory after territory and either destroyed or disabled everything that the various governments have thrown at them!

And now they are on their way through Federation space towards Earth… And everything that the Federation sends there way is either being crippled or destroyed as well!

The only thing they have left… Is the upgraded Starship Enterprise… and a promoted CO that Star Fleet decides to put in to the Captain’s chair! Because lets be honest… After 5 years in deep, deep space… If Admiral James T. Kirk can’t stop them, no one can!

The bridge crew getting together to go combat the V’Ger probe!

Now I am gonna say it, I am very well aware of the fact that I may actually be the only one who likes this movie… And I can see why that is!

It does have some real dull moments… Some, ‘WTF’ moments… But if you can get past all that… It is actually a rather surprisingly good art house style science fiction film… With a great cast, a decent story line, great music and even better visuals!

Now if you are looking for the visuals of a lifetime like you might be thinking this should be… Yeah sorry… That is probably not going to work out in your favor! But if you want to sit back, and relax and enjoy… You might this to be decent!
