Enjoying Horror & Science Fiction At It’s Best!

Starcrash (1978) – Science Fiction Movie Review

About to do battle with laser swords… How cool is that?

Now I don’t know if I have proven yet or not, but I am a huge fan of B Movies!

You know, alot of people think, because they don’t have top calibur everything that these movies just are not as great as they should be, well I am here to tell you that, that is just not true!

Very often those that are creating the B Movie… It is a labor of love for them! Most of the talent are not really making much if any real money… The Director often times is the guy who is gathering financing for their masterpiece… And it is all surprisingly well made… And then you add the two or 3 big names, and you really have something there!

And Starcrash (1978) is definitely one of the classic B movies worth watching!

Written by: Nat Wachsberger (That Man In Istanbul), Luigi Cozzi (Hercules), & Directed by: Luigi Cozzi. Starring: Marjoe Gortner (Sidewinder 1), Caroline Munro (Maniac), Christopher Plummer (The Insider), David Hasslehoff (Baywatch), Robert Tessier (The Cannonball Run), Joe Spinell (Taxi Driver), Nadia Cassini (Pulp), Judd Hamilton (The Last Horror Film) & Hamilton Camp (Joe Dirt).

“You know, my son, I wouldn’t be Emperor of the Galaxy if I didn’t have some powers at my disposal. Imperial Battleship, halt the flow of time!” – The Emperor (A quote by: Christopher Plummer, from the movie, Starcrash (1978).)

Ok, so in the future the galaxy really is basically devoted between the light side and the dark side (No, not of the force… Although there is definite similarities.) But on one side, there is the, ‘Emperor Of The Galaxy’ (Played by: Christopher Plummer).

The Emperor of the Galaxy!

Now the Emperor Of The Galaxy is in control of basically everything that is good!

On the evil side we have the evil lord, ‘Count Zarth Arn’ (Played by Joe Spinell)… Zarth Arn is basicallty the leader of everything that is evil… And most of those that would be willing to do evil!

And with Zarth Arn prepping to launch a new WMD on the universe… The Emperor has sent his son, ‘Prince Simon’ (Played by: David Hasselhoff) on a secret mission to destroy the weapon before it is released!

Is that Mitch Buchannan? Ot is that Prince Simon?

But when he gets captured… It will be up to Akton (Played by: Marjoe Gortner) and Stella Star (Played by: Caroline Munro)… A band of smugglers to stop the evil count, before he can unleash his weapon, and to rescue the, ‘Prince’ before all is lost!

Now there is a couple of interesting things about this movie:

1: Starcrash would not be the last time Joe Spinell, Caroline Munro and Judd Hamilton would work together… They would come back together for the bloody and violent horror movie, Maniac (1980).

Caroline Munro and Joe Spinell in a scene from, Maniac (1980)!

2. At this time, David Hasselhoff may have been more of an up and coming musician, but Christopher Plummer had a very well established career dating back over 20 years. Caroline Munro was also a Hammer girl, having done the Hammer Horror film, Dracula A.D. 1972 (1972) with Christopher Lee!

And as for this movie, it really is a ton of fun… I mean it is a B movie… So it definitely was not, ‘Star Wars’… But it had incredibly awesome special effects, a great cast. and a fun story… And cheesy as hell uniforms that really does seem to delineate what a B Movie is!

If you are looking for just a straight up fun space adventure with out any pretentention, I think you are really going to like this one quite a bit… But if you are looking for that next, ‘Star Wars’ movie… Than this one probably is not for you!

But check it out, I loved it and you might as well!
