So you know I was always one of those people that really just could not deal with having to sit through a foreign film that was subtitled!
No for me, when it came to foreign films they always had to be dubbed… And there are some legitimately great dubbed horror and science fiction films out there! But it wasn’t till I was at an all night horror movie marathon that I happened to see a subtitled Chinese horror movie that turned out to be pretty awesome!
Ever since then, I have seen a couple of foreign horror movies that I liked quite a bit that were subtitled, that I think you guys might really like! One of them is am Indonesian horror film called, The Secret (2018), and the other one (A Thai horror movie) that I thought that I would review here, The Promise (2017).
Written by: Sopana Chaowwiwatkul (Laddaland), Supalerk Ningsanond (The Teacher’s Diary), Sophon Sakdaphisit (Shutter) & Directed by: Sophon Sakdaphisit. Starring: Bee Namthip (Devil’s Rose), Apichaya Thongkham (The Gifted), Thunyaphat Pattarateerachaicharoen (The Promise) & Panisara Rikulsurakan (The Promise).
Ib (Played by: Panisara Rikulsurakan) and Boum (Played by: Thunyaphat Pattarateerachaicharoen) decide to commit suicide together in Bangkok in 1997. After reneging on the promise, the vengeful ghost of Ib returns 20 years later to haunt Boum (The older Boum played by: Bee Namthip) and her 15 year old daughter, Bell (Apichaya Thongkham).
Now in truth, this movie is a foreign subtitled movie… And so if you lost track of the direction for which this movie took… It could sometimes prove hard to follow.
But despite that problem, it was a surprisingly well crafted movie, with a great story, great talent, and the eye of Sophon Sakdaphisit for horror movies in my opinion is just as good as any of the other American horror movie directors out there!
So check this one out! It is well worth it!
